Before college, CDT Sierra was born and raised in Milwaukee. He is from a family of four which includes his mom, dad, and younger brother. CDT Sierra went to a small grade school named St. John's Lutheran. Around 7th or 8th grade, his interest in the military really began to grow after he learned that his mom and uncle both flew helicopters for the Army in and around the Vietnam era. After grade school, Jesse went to a Lutheran high school. This served to both strengthen his Christian faith and his aspirations to be an Army officer. He played soccer and ran track, and up to this point had been in Taekwondo for eleven years. He also competed and won national medals for sparring in Taekwondo. At the same time, he maintained a strong academic record. "None of this would have been possible though without my parents pushing me to do my best", says CDT Sierra. During high school, he explored options of how to become an officer, and the ROTC at UW Madison shone through.
CDT Sierra joined the ROTC because it fit his plans to join the military. Being an officer and leading others is what he has wanted to do ever since grade school. So, CDT Sierra applied for and soon earned a scholarship. The ROTC strengthens his academic life at school too. It helps him stay focused on being a student, while at the same time developing him as a leader.
As far as advice for new cadets, he says to "be academically strong and make sure to maintain a healthy, well body". Also, he advises to be involved in as many ROTC extracurricular activities as is manageable. Jesse says that joining in the extracurricular activities has helped him to meet new people and make new friends as well as give him extra training.
His habits include playing video games, snowboarding, and paintballing in his free time.
A fun fact about CDT Sierra is that he has a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo.
