Major Berres was born and raised in Watertown, Wisconsin, and he graduated from Johnson Creek High School in 1984. He attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse where he enrolled in ROTC. He received his commission in May of 1988. Major Berres received a BS in Business Management.
He started his military career as an executive officer for the 3-339th, 84th Division. Other duty stations were 2-334 and 2-274, 84th Division. While with the 2-274 he was a Company Commander for three years and served as the S1 for two years. In 2001 he was promoted to Major and accepted the job as Public Affairs Officer for the 84th Division. Currently, he is assigned to the 8th BDE of the 100th Training Division as an instructor at UW-Whitewater, Whitewater, Wisconsin, for the Badger Battalion.
