Lieutenant Colonel Jay Pitz, a native of Vinton, Iowa, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in 1990 from the University of Iowa. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Iowa and a Masters of Arts in History from Louisiana State University. His military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Ranger School, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Infantry Officers Advanced Course, and the Command and General Staff College.

Lieutenant Colonel Pitz is a combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm (1991) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2007-2008). His previous assignments include the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; the 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea; the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana; the Battle Command Training Program at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; the Infantry Training Brigade at Fort Benning, Georgia; and the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Lieutenant Colonel Pitz' awards include the Bronze Star Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (5 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon, the Saudi Arabian Liberation Medal, and the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal. He has also been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge (with star), Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Ranger Tab.

Lieutenant Colonel Pitz and his wife, Julia, have six children.
