Master Sergeant Shawn C. Simmons is a second generation Field Artillery NCO, born at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 27th, 1984, and attended One Station Unit Training (OSUT) as a Field Artillery Cannon Crewmember at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Master Sergeant Simmons retired on 1 Sep 2008 after 24 years service in the Army. Master Sergeant Simmons has completed his BS in Accounting from Upper Iowa University. He has been married for 11 years and has 2 children, and his hobbies include playing hockey, hunting, outdoor activities and spending time with his family.
He has served in numerous leadership positions including Senior Military Science Instructor at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Gunner, Howitzer Section Chief, and Platoon Sergeant. He is presently serving as Military Science Instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
His stateside assignments include 1-27 Field Artillery (1985-1986) and 5-29 Field Artillery (1991-1995) at Fort Carson, Colorado, 1-377 Field Artillery Regiment (AASLT) (1996-2000), and 1(ABN)-321 Field Artillery Regiment (2000-2001) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His overseas assignments include 2-11 Field Artillery (1995), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and two tours in Germany: First in 1-36 Field Artillery Regiment (1988-1990), Augsburg, Germany, 3-1 Field Artillery (1990-1991) Bamberg, Germany, and most recently with 4-27 Field Artillery in Baumholder, Germany.
His deployments include 8 months in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, 6 months in Pristina, Kosovo, as a member of the NATO Headquarters for KFOR, and 15 months in Baghdad and North Babil Province in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has also participated in Hurricane relief efforts in North Carolina and Wild-land firefighting in Montana.
MSG Simmons is a graduate of the Primary Leadership Course (PLDC), the Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course (BNCOC), and the Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers Course (ANCOC). MSG Simmons is also a graduate of the Airborne, Air Assault, and Rappel Master courses. His Awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards) , Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (seven awards), Army Achievement Medal (eight awards), Good Conduct Medal (seven awards), National Defense Service Medal (two awards), Humanitarian Service Medal (three awards), NCO Professional Development Ribbon (w/ numeral 3), Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon (w/ numeral 3). He is also the recipient of the Combat Action Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Venezuelan Parachutist Badge.
